"No positive spin is possible. Admit mistake."

Government officials knew the Air Force One flyover of the Statue of Liberty would scare the bejabbers out of New Yorkers, but went ahead with it anyway and quickly realized their bigtime blunder.

A barrage of e-mails between officials right after the flight made public Friday showed a flurry of second guessing, finger-pointing, attempts at damage control - even comparisons between them and The Three Stooges.

R.I.P. Steve McNair

Shot twice in the head and two more times in the chest, former NFL quarterback Steve McNair was the victim of a homicide, police declared Sunday. But authorities wouldn't say it was a murder-suicide — even with his 20-year-old girlfriend dead at his feet from a single bullet.

McNair had been dating Saleh Kazemi for several months, and Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron said Sunday that a semiautomatic pistol was found under her body. She was shot in the head.

McNair, who was married with four sons, had a permit to carry a handgun in Tennessee, and he was arrested once before with a 9mm weapon although charges in the case were dropped. Police said they had not yet determined who owned the gun found at the scene.

Mo gets his 500th save and first RBI

Mariano Rivera has 500 saves—and one precious RBI.

Guess which feat he was most excited about.

On a New York night that belonged to baseball’s most unflappable closer, Rivera became the second reliever to reach the 500-save milestone when the Yankees held off the punchless Mets 4-2 Sunday for a Subway Series sweep.

He joined Milwaukee’s Trevor Hoffman(notes), who has 571 saves, as the only major leaguers with 500. The biggest surprise, though: Rivera drew a bases-loaded walk to add a ninth-inning insurance run.

“I had one thing in mind—just try to do something,” Rivera said, before expounding on his save. “Don’t get me wrong, it’s definitely special.”

Ed McMahon dies at 86

Ed McMahon, the loyal Tonight Show sidekick who bolstered boss Johnny Carson with guffaws and a resounding “H-e-e-e-e-e-ere's Johnny” for 30 years, died early today at 86.

Mr. McMahon died shortly after midnight at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center surrounded by his wife, Pam, and other family members, said his publicist, Howard Bragman. Mr. Bragman didn't give a cause of death, saying only that Mr. McMahon had a “multitude of health problems the last few months.”

David Carradine: Masturbation or Suicide?

After a maid found David Carradine's body in a closet in his Bangkok hotel room, police called it a suspected suicide. But the actor's manager refuses to believe it.

"I can tell you 100 percent that he would have never committed suicide," Tiffany Smith, who along with Chuck Binder managed the Kill Bill star, tells PEOPLE. "He was too full of life."

Carradine, 72, was in Thailand filming the movie Stretch when his nude body was discovered Thursday morning. The body was in a sitting position, with a yellow rope wrapped around the neck and attached to a closet bar, said police Col. Somprasong Yentuam, chief of the Lumpini area station. "We believe that Mr. David committed suicide but it is suspicious," said Yentuam.

According to the newspaper, representatives from the Mayor of London's office and Visit London, the city's official visitor organization, have received assurances from the National Football League of a commitment to hold the event in London.

The Sanchez era begins

Brett Favre was released from the reserve-retired list by the New York Jets on Tuesday night, making the quarterback a free agent if he decides to again come out of retirement.

When Favre was dealt to New York from Green Bay in August, there were conditions in the trade that required the Packers to be compensated if the Jets moved the three-time MVP. Those no longer apply if he signs elsewhere.

The 39-year-old Favre, who spent one disappointing season with New York, had requested the move several weeks ago through agent Bus Cook, but insisted he has no plans to come out of retirement for a 19th season.

Zig-Zag lines on the roads?

The Virginia Department of Transportation says it's part of a safety campaign to get drivers to slow down in a high pedestrian and bicycle area. The 500 feet of zig-zagging lines are painted on the ground on Belmont Ridge Road, where it intersects with the Washington and Old Dominion trail in Loudoun County.

"It is a low cost strategy to get motorists to slow down as they approach the bike trail and pedestrian path," says VDOT's Mike Salmon. "While at first motorists may be a little disoriented, the main point is to get them to pay attention and slow down through that area."

Female Body Inspectors

Two FBI workers are accused of using surveillance equipment to spy on teenage girls as they undressed and tried on prom gowns at a charity event at a West Virginia mall.

The FBI employees have been charged with conspiracy and committing criminal invasion of privacy. They were working in an FBI satellite control room at the mall when they positioned a camera on temporary changing rooms and zoomed in for at least 90 minutes on girls dressing for the Cinderella Project fashion show, Marion County Prosecutor Pat Wilson said Monday.

By "I don't want attention," she meant "Please, please, please give me attention"

Nadya Suleman, in a further effort to stay off of welfare and be less of a sponge, has filed papers to trademark the term "Octomom," TheSmokingGun.com reported.

She wants to use the word to sell "disposable diapers, dresses, pants, shirts and textile diapers," according to the legal documents posted on the website.

Suleman and her attorney filed the applications with the U.S, Patent and Trademark Office last Friday and also notes that she wants to use "Octomom" in connection with TV programming. She is reportedly working on getting a reality show.

BOOM! Madden's gone.

Cris Collinsworth now finds himself the lead analyst for NBC's Sunday night NFL game.

Again.

Collinsworth had the role before but never got to perform.

The former Cincinnati Bengals receiver, who got his TV break working NFL games not deemed worthy of airing in much of the USA, had worked his way up to lead analyst on Fox until NBC lured him back to work games on TV's most-watched night. NBC's Sunday night games would supplant Monday Night Football as the NFL's marquee prime-time package.

Yankees get pounded in home opener

When the new Yankee Stadium operations crew finally shut down their state-of-the-art scoreboard late Thursday afternoon, the act seemed more merciful than anything else. On a day when the Yankees were here to celebrate their new ballpark, to celebrate their home opener and to celebrate -- of all things -- the Yankees, they ditched that celebratory mood in a hurry.

Instead, it was the Indians who shook hands and high-fived on the Yankees' new field, parlaying a nine-run rally into a 10-2 win.

And so 86 years after Babe Ruth christened the old Yankee Stadium with its first home run, and 33 years after the Yankees rapped out 11 runs in the opening of their renovated park, it was Cliff Lee, Grady Sizemore and Victor Martinez who made their marks.

"That's not what we hoped for today," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.

Vermont to legalize sexting?

The Vermont Legislature is considering a bill that would legalize so-called "sexting" between teenagers.

Sexting refers to the exchange of explicit photos and videos via mobile phone. Under current laws, participants can be charged with child pornography, but lawmakers are considering a bill to legalize the consensual exchange of graphic images between two people 13 to 18 years old. Passing along such images to others would remain a crime.

Is the Yanks' expensive new pitcher hurt already?

The Yankees insist CC Sabathia is healthy, but the heating pad, a dip in velocity and his awful results on Opening Day are causing some knowledgeable baseball observers to wonder what was happening when the lefty got rocked by the Orioles.

"When I'm watching him pitch and see the heat pad and then see him throwing 88-89 (miles per hour), it's almost like he's protecting something and pitching at 70%," said ex-catcher John Flaherty, who played in the majors for 14 seasons and is now a YES Network analyst. "But everybody says he's feeling fine, so obviously that wasn't the issue."

What the HELL, Japan?

The creators of the Child-robot with Biomimetic Body, or CB2, say it's slowly developing social skills by interacting with humans and watching their facial expressions, mimicking a mother-baby relationship.

A bald, child-like creature dangles its legs from a chair as its shoulders rise and fall with rhythmic breathing and its black eyes follow movements across the room. It's not human -- but it is paying attention.

Below the soft silicon skin of one of Japan's most sophisticated robots, processors record and evaluate information. The 130-cm (four-foot, four-inch) humanoid is designed to learn just like a human infant.

This girl might actually have to PAY for college!

The Louisville Cardinals crawled out of an early hole to beat Oklahoma 61-59 in the national semifinals Sunday night and end Courtney Paris' stellar career. Out too soon, four-time All-American Paris now must fulfill her promise to pay back the cost of her four-year scholarship if the Sooners failed to win the title. She left the court in tears after exchanging hugs with Louisville's McCoughtry and huddling with her team for a final time.

"I do make good on the guarantee," said Paris, whose father is former NFL offensive lineman Bubba Paris. "Not today, though. Obviously, I don't have $64,000 waiting, but I do make good on it."

Paris goes home without ever playing in a national championship game. In fact, this was her first trip to the Final Four. Still, her name dots the record book. She is the NCAA's best rebounder of all time and the first player to block at least 100 shots in each of her four years in college.
