Melky hits for the cycle!

The moment his fly ball sailed over Jermaine Dye's head, there was no way Melky Cabrera was settling for a double.

Needing a triple to complete the cycle, Cabrera lowered his head and ran as hard as he could, beating the throw to third to make history.

"After I got the double, home run and base hit, I knew the triple would do it," Cabrera said through an interpreter. "When the ball went over Jermaine Dye's head, I knew I had a chance. I started running even harder. I was thinking triple."

It was just the 15th cycle in Yankees history, and the first since Tony Fernandez did it on Sept. 3, 1995, against the A's in the Bronx. The last Yankee to record a cycle on the road was Joe DiMaggio, who did it in 1948, also in Chicago.

Mo gets his 500th save and first RBI

Mariano Rivera has 500 saves—and one precious RBI.

Guess which feat he was most excited about.

On a New York night that belonged to baseball’s most unflappable closer, Rivera became the second reliever to reach the 500-save milestone when the Yankees held off the punchless Mets 4-2 Sunday for a Subway Series sweep.

He joined Milwaukee’s Trevor Hoffman(notes), who has 571 saves, as the only major leaguers with 500. The biggest surprise, though: Rivera drew a bases-loaded walk to add a ninth-inning insurance run.

“I had one thing in mind—just try to do something,” Rivera said, before expounding on his save. “Don’t get me wrong, it’s definitely special.”

Atlanta Braves pitcher breaks hand, GOES BACK OUT TO PITCH

Atlanta reliever Jeff Bennett said he punched a door after an inning, and was in such a state of anger, he couldn’t remember doing it until he saw the dent.

The bone was broken all the way through, and a bump rose beneath the skin. Bennett said he pushed the bone back into place, didn’t tell anyone what happened, and went back out and pitched the seventh.

He gave up a homer to Nick Swisher in the seventh but made it through the inning. About 30 minutes later, Bennett finally told a team trainer what he had done. He said he waited because he was afraid and embarrassed.

A-Rod's Fatigue Caused by Kate Hudson?

Just how taxing is it to get touchy-feely with Kate Hudson? New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez spent Friday and Saturday warming the bench against the Florida Marlins due to "fatigue," but he seemed to have plenty of energy to hit the Miami club scene with the actress.

Manny's the newest steroid user

Los Angeles Dodgers slugger Manny Ramirez tested positive for a banned performance-enhancing substance, incurring an immediate 50-game suspension and serving as the highest-profile reminder yet that the use of such drugs in the testing era may have been reduced, but not eradicated.

Ramirez will be able to return to the Dodgers -- who currently have the best record in baseball -- on July 3. He will lose about $7.65 million of his $25 million salary.

Yankees get pounded in home opener

When the new Yankee Stadium operations crew finally shut down their state-of-the-art scoreboard late Thursday afternoon, the act seemed more merciful than anything else. On a day when the Yankees were here to celebrate their new ballpark, to celebrate their home opener and to celebrate -- of all things -- the Yankees, they ditched that celebratory mood in a hurry.

Instead, it was the Indians who shook hands and high-fived on the Yankees' new field, parlaying a nine-run rally into a 10-2 win.

And so 86 years after Babe Ruth christened the old Yankee Stadium with its first home run, and 33 years after the Yankees rapped out 11 runs in the opening of their renovated park, it was Cliff Lee, Grady Sizemore and Victor Martinez who made their marks.

"That's not what we hoped for today," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.

Mets blow stadium opener

This was not the grand opening the Mets had envisioned.

It was a grand opening in one sense -- the first regular-season game in the history of Citi Field, this jewel of a ballpark amidst the bustle of a borough. But from the start -- from the first batter -- something seemed wrong. A little off. Even after the Padres completed their rather anticlimactic 6-5 victory over the Mets, that feeling had not subsided.

The Mets had lost. And grander openings would have to wait.

Glavine's 97 year-old arm is falling apart? Shhhhhocking

Oh, the shackles of high school sports!

A high school baseball star who made two plate appearances for a minor-league team managed by his father has been suspended for the upcoming prep season.

Cody Gabella, a junior at Notre Dame High School in Burlington, was suspended by the Iowa High School Athletic Association for violating a rule that prohibits a prep athlete from playing with or against college players or teams.

Cody Gabella's father Jim manages the Burlington Bees, an affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. Cody made his plate appearances during an exhibition against Southeastern Community College on Tuesday.

Carl Pavano is now Cleveland's problem

Carl Pavano (0-1), who made his first start for Cleveland after being a free-agent bust with the Yankees the past four seasons, gets the loss in one full inning pitched.

“I was trying to be aggressive and I let some pitches get away from me,” said Pavano who gave up nine runs pitching into the second. “That put me more in a defensive mode. It’s disappointing.”

The New New York Yankees Menu

Get your hot-pressed Cuban sandwiches here! And your Asian noodle bowls! And garlic fries!

The dishes will be on the menu lineup when the new Yankee Stadium opens next month.

Old favorites like Nathan's Famous hot dogs will share concession stand space with newcomers including Brother Jimmy's barbecue and Soy Kitchen sushi.

There will be kosher and health-food options and a kids' cart featuring peanut butter sandwiches.

The Yankees say traditional items like hot dogs and peanuts will cost the same as last year.
