College education, clearly working out for everyone

Even as colleges nationwide celebrate commencement season, hundreds of schools are failing to graduate a majority of their students in six years, a report says today.

Nationally, four-year colleges graduated an average of just 53% of entering students within six years, and "rates below 50%, 40% and even 30% are distressingly easy to find," says the report by the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank. It's based on data reported to the Education Department by nearly 1,400 schools about full-time first-time students who entered in fall 2001.

Oh, the shackles of high school sports!

A high school baseball star who made two plate appearances for a minor-league team managed by his father has been suspended for the upcoming prep season.

Cody Gabella, a junior at Notre Dame High School in Burlington, was suspended by the Iowa High School Athletic Association for violating a rule that prohibits a prep athlete from playing with or against college players or teams.

Cody Gabella's father Jim manages the Burlington Bees, an affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. Cody made his plate appearances during an exhibition against Southeastern Community College on Tuesday.

Welcome to college... just kidding!

The University of California, San Diego accidentally sent a welcome e-mail to about 29,000 applicants who had been rejected.

The e-mail sent Monday evening invited all 47,000 students who applied to an admitted students' day on campus.

UCSD Admissions Director Mae Brown apologized for the mistake Tuesday and explained that the e-mail was supposed to go to about 18,000 accepted students.
